Level Up Mechanism
The campaign uses a System-driven progression model instead of traditional XP tracking, unless the DM prefers XP.
Recommended Method: Mission Milestones + System Score
Players begin at Level 3.
They level up when they descend to a new floor, but Floor 1 also introduces System Score as a way to earn boons, loot, and future class options.
Floor 1 Progression
Players reach Level 4 after entering Floor 2, assuming they survived and completed the Floor 1 exit condition.
Optional: If you want faster progression, players level to 4 immediately after defeating The Checkout King or entering the stairwell chamber.
System Score
Track each player’s notable moments. Do not overcomplicate this. The DM can award points informally.
Gain 1 System Score when a player:
- Completes a mission.
- Unlocks an achievement.
- Saves an NPC at personal risk.
- Defeats a named enemy.
- Uses the environment creatively.
- Makes the table laugh in-character.
- Solves a puzzle cleverly.
- Accepts a complication for a reward.
Spend System Score on Floor 1 or between floors:
- 2 points: Reroll a loot box result.
- 3 points: Upgrade a Bronze Crate to Silver.
- 4 points: Ask the System for a hint.
- 5 points: Gain a minor boon or title.
- 6 points: Unlock a class customization option later.
DM Note
System Score should reward fun and creativity, not punish quiet players. Make sure every character has opportunities to shine.
